Traditional source code escrow was designed primarily to protect access to software source code when a software provider could no longer support or maintain its product. Cloud computing and SaaS applications have made that equation considerably more complex.

Modern applications may depend not only on source code, but also on cloud infrastructure, databases, configuration information, third-party services, deployment processes, and other components necessary to operate the software.
